Beginning Sewing for Kids
- 1). Show your child how to thread the blunt needle with yarn. You will probably have to tie the yarn or thread for your child until she becomes more proficient at beginning sewing for kids.
- 2). Provide a piece of plastic canvas for your child to practice hand-stitching. The even spacing trains young brains on the process of making neat stitches with a needle. Practice until proficiency is gained.
- 3). Watch as your child threads the sewing needle with thread, providing assistance and direction as necessary.
- 4). Show your child how to tie a knot in the thread. This is best accomplished by winding the thread several times around the finger, rolling it into a knot as you pull it off. Practice this until it is mastered.
- 5). Use fabric scraps to practice hand-stitching. Focus on the evenness of stitches to begin with, turning to small stitches as mastery is developed.
- 6). Create a simple project for your child to complete to graduate from beginning sewing for kids. This can be a basic pillow, drawstring bag or other straightforward project.
