When you have a website you want 3 things, one is site visitors 2 is brand awareness and 3 is to be ranked on a high positions in search engines for the keyword phrases relevant to your site. Creating articles and posting them to free article submission sites can help you achieve all 3 goals, and usually at a cost which is low or free (side point, I calculate the time it takes me to write an article as a cost...).

Free-press-release.com - despite the name it also allows the publishing of articles along with press releases, and it is free, but you do not get any links in the free articles, for links you have to pay.
Ideamarketers - This site lets you post free articles and include 1 free hyperlink in them. If you want you can pay them for placement of your articles on their homepage.
Smuze.com - Free article directory and press release directory. You can currently include multiple hyperlinks in your articles for free and all new articles are linked in their homepage (until they get bumped down by new articles).
Goarticles - Free article directory, they allow free links but only in the resource box on the bottom of the articles.
Things to remember - Links in the top of the articles (in the beginning) are worth more than links on the bottom. It is recommended to link the main keyword both on the top and the bottom of your article. Unique articles are worth more than duplicated ones, so try to write as many as you can.
