How to Measure for Replacement Bathroom Countertops

    • 1). Measure the exact length and depth of the vanity in inches. Add 1/2 inch to either side of the vanity, and 1 inch to the front of the vanity for overhang.

    • 2). Find the center line of the sink. Locate the P-trap or waste trap of the sink and find the center point where it will attach to the sink. Measure out to the left and right edges from this spot. Bathroom sinks must have a minimum of 20 inches to sit in by themselves -- 10 inches out on either side of the center line. If you are choosing to move the location of the sink in the vanity and top, make sure it complies with this code.

    • 3). Check the door swing on the bathroom door if it opens inward just in front of the vanity. Make sure that the 1-inch overhang typically seen in vanity tops will not interfere with the opening and closing of the door. Hold the measuring tape out to this point at the area where the door will pass to make sure there is not interference before ordering the top.
