How to Repair a Toshiba M35X-S149 Power Jack
- 1). Unplug the AC power adapter from your M35X series laptop if still connected. Close the LCD screen on the unit, flip it over and remove the battery pack.
- 2). Locate the two screws for the memory card slot cover on the bottom of the M35X labeled “M.” Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws. Remove the two screws for the wireless card slot cover labeled “W” as well. Remove the two slot covers from the bottom of the computer.
- 3). Disengage the clips that secure the memory module in its slot. Remove the memory module from the M35X, and set it aside. Do the same for the wireless card.
- 4). Remove the screw with the “CD” label, and slide the optical drive out of the M35X chassis.
- 5). Remove the screw next to the “HDD” label, and pull the hard drive tray out of the laptop. Note that the hard drive tray contains the mounting brackets, as well as the hard drive itself.
- 6). Remove the three screws on the bottom of the M35X with a “K” label next to them. After removing the three “K” screws, flip the M35X over and open the LCD screen. Open the LCD on the M35X all the way until it is almost flat or 180 degrees.
- 7). Insert the tip of an awl or a small flathead screwdriver into the small slot above the above the “F” keys on the M35X keyboard. Use the awl or screwdriver to pry up on the lower part of the keyboard edge and loosen it until the plastic tabs on the edge cover disengage. While prying up the edge cover, work your way from the right side of the M35X notebook to the left. Remove the keyboard edge cover from the M35X laptop.
- 8). Remove the three screws above the M35X keyboard revealed by removing the edge cover. Lift up on the top edge of the keyboard after removing the screws. Rotate the M35X keyboard toward you and disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable underneath that connects to the motherboard.
- 9). Remove the four remaining screws visible in the keyboard tray area of the M35X chassis. Lift up on the top edge of the palm rest, and unplug the touchpad cable from the motherboard. Remove the palm rest assembly from the M35X chassis, and close the LCD screen.
- 10
Turn the M35X laptop until you view the rear edge of the laptop that contains the video, USB and other ports. Remove the two screws on either side of the rear edge that LCD screen hinges. Turn the M35X around, and open the LCD screen. Unplug the video and wireless antenna cables from the upper part of the motherboard that lead to the LCD screen to the motherboard. Lift straight up on the M35X LCD screen, and remove it from the chassis. - 11
Flip the M35X upside down again, and remove all remaining screws. Turn the laptop right side up again, and remove all screws visible on the motherboard. - 12
Turn the M35X so that you can view the rear edge again. Remove the thumbscrew nuts for the parallel and video ports with the nut driver. - 13
Tilt the front edge of the M35X motherboard up slightly, and pull it out of the lower part of the notebook chassis. - 14
Plug the desoldering tool into an electrical outlet, and wait a few minutes for it to warm up. While the desoldering tool is heating up, locate the solder points for the power jack on the bottom side of the M35X motherboard (on the left side if looking at the bottom of the motherboard). - 15
Touch the tip of the desoldering tool to one of the solder points for the power jack, and wait for it to melt. Do the same for the other two solder points that connect the power jack to the motherboard. Melt the solder points, and quickly pull the jack from the motherboard before the solder cools and hardens again. - 16
Use the tip of the awl to remove any remaining solder from the three holes left empty by removing the power jack. - 17
Align the three thin aluminum prongs on the new power jack with the holes left empty when you removed the old one. Push the new power jack into the holes, and solder the prongs into place on the motherboard. - 18
Reinsert the M35X motherboard into the lower part of the chassis, and secure with the retaining screws. Reassemble the Toshiba M35X laptop by reversing the steps you used to take it apart.
