If it is true that treatments such as herbal sprays, nasal strips and tablets are little more than "snake oil" is there anything we can do to stop snoring? Yes there is if we take a look at some of the causes of snoring.
One of the main reasons that people snore is because the uvula and back of the throat become relaxed and effectively vibrate causing the rasping sound we call snoring.
One of the prime reasons our bodies relax is if we have consumed a quantity of alcohol before going to sleep.
It has also been proved that smokers tend to snore more than non-smokers.
Another factor is weight.
Overweight people tend to have fatty tissue around their necks and this can lead during sleep to a narrowing of the airways again causing snoring.
Overweight people as a generalisation do not tend to exercise every much which is another problem.
It has been shown that those who exercise regularly and have good muscle tone are less likely to snore than the couch potato.
By now you should be seeing the answer to how to cure your snoring problem.
Forget about expensive treatments or gadgets, there is no guarantee they will work anyway.
Do not drink alcohol before going to bed and give up smoking.
If you are overweight go on a diet combined with an exercise program.
If you have not undertaken exercise for some time, have heart problems or are seriously overweight you should check with your medical advisor before undertaking an exercise programme.
For some people just using a simple nasal decongestant before going to bed may do the trick.
People who snore tend to sleep on their backs so another possible natural cure is to try and sleep on your side.
This will help you keep your airway open and should reduce the noise level considerably.
Sweet dreams.
