Timing

• To flourish, pecan trees require a long growing season with plenty of heat. But the best time to plant the trees is in late fall or early winter. Transplanting the tree months before summer arrives gives it plenty of time to adjust to its new home without stressing the tree.
  
  

Planting

• Choose a healthy pecan tree, preferably a commercial variety that has been grafted onto seedling rootstock. The tree should be about 4 to 6 feet in height. Make sure the planting hole is deep enough that the tree's roots don't need to curl.
  
  

Maintenance

• Newly-planted trees need a good, long soak immediately after planting. During the first year, make sure the tree gets the moisture it needs to become established.
