How to Have Beautiful Soft Highlights

    • 1). Look at your hair color closely. You want highlights that work with your current color. When you choose a highlighting color, stay within one to two shades of your current color. For example, if your hair is dirty blonde, you would choose a blonde highlighting shade that is one or two shades lighter.

    • 2). Wait 48 hours before you add highlights. The natural oils in your hair need to build up in order to protect your scalp. Do not wash your hair. Avoid using hair products such as hairspray or creams, as well.

    • 3). Mix your highlighting products according to the box. Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Apply the mixture to your hair. Use a highlighting wand. Run the wand through strands of your hair. Highlight strands of hair all over your head. The key to getting softer highlights is to subtly highlight strands of hair all over the head and not in clumps. Start with the back of your head and work your way toward the front. This helps prevent you from smearing highlights in the front.

    • 4). Leave the mixture on your hair for the appropriate amount of time. Check your hair frequently while the color develops. Take a few strands of hair and wash the mixture out. Look at the color. If it is not light enough, leave the rest of the mixture on. Wash the mixture out when you reach the color you want.

    • 5). Rinse your hair in cool water. Leave an after-color conditioner in your hair for at least two minutes. The after-color conditioner helps moisturize your hair and nourish it after trauma caused by highlighting.
