How to Install a Drive Shaft Carrier Bearing in a Chevrolet
- 1). Park the Chevrolet on a level surface and set the parking brake. Lift up the front end of the vehicle with the jack and put jack stands underneath the frame.
- 2). Put the drain pan underneath the transmission. Unbolt the drive shaft from the axle with an open-end wrench and pull it out of the axle. Unbolt the carrier bearing from the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the two-piece drive shaft and carrier bearing out from the transmission and then out from under the vehicle.
- 3). Install the drive shaft assembly into the press. Use the press to remove the carrier bearing from the center of the drive shaft. Set the replacement carrier bearing on the press, then use the press to install the carrier bearing onto the center of the drive shaft.
- 4). Lift the drive shaft into the rear of the transmission and then bolt the carrier bearing to the chassis with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lift the other end of the drive shaft up into the axle and bolt it in place with an open-end wrench. Lower the truck off the jack stands using a jack.
