Ways to Save Electricity While Using an Air Conditioner

    Insulation

    • Weatherstrip the doors and windows in the rooms with air conditioning. Seal any gaps in the caulking between the window frame and air conditioner. There should be no openings for air to escape the room, which would compromise your air conditioner's efficiency. Put curtains, blinds or shades over your windows to prevent the sun from entering the room and help keep the inside air cool. If you have storm windows, make sure they are tightly shut.

    Maintenance

    • A dirty filter reduces the air flow through the air conditioning unit, which causes it to need more energy to cool a room. Clean your air conditioner filter at least once a month. Hold the filter up to a bright light. If you are unable to see through the filter, it requires a cleaning. Check the user manual that came with your air conditioner to learn how to clean its fans and condenser coils. You can also have your air conditioner professionally cleaned by an air conditioner maintenance company.

    Thermostat

    • Set your air conditioner thermostat no lower than 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Your air conditioner energy use goes up by 12 percent for each degree you lower its temperature, according to the Florida Solar Energy Center. Try wearing less clothing around your home while the air conditioner is running and see if you can tolerate raising its thermostat a degree or two to help conserve energy.
