    • 1). Measure the width, depth and height of the current electric cooktop. Most cooktops are referred to by their width, 30 inches or 36 inches being the most common, although there are exceptions. A new cooktop with the same dimensions as the old is likely to fit the existing space with no alterations. If alterations are needed, ask the salesperson if professional installation is available.

    • 2). Write down the features and price ranges for electric cooktops. Research them online before hitting the stores.

    • 3). Examine the features offered on new electric cooktops. Do you need hot surface indicator lights, a warming zone and/or automatic shutoff? All nice features, but costly. Check out the most basic units first and go from there. Most cooktops have four heating elements of varying sizes.

    • 4). Touch the digital panels and the controls. Do they feel sturdy and appear convenient to operate? Examine the warranties. Part warranties should be for one year minimum and five years for the glass top. Look for Energy Star options for maximum efficiency.
