Travel Scholarships for Students
- The Freeman Foundation sponsors the Freeman Awards For Study In Asia (Freeman-ASIA). The program aims to strengthen ties between the United States and East Asia through education and promoting greater understanding of each other. U.S. citizens or permanent resident undergraduate students in good standing at two- or four-year colleges or universities are eligible to apply. Only applicants already receiving need-based financial assistance or who demonstrate such need are eligible. The award covers study abroad program expenses and airfare, living costs, local transportation and books. The program only considers students with little or no experience in the selected country. Intensive language study is an important segment of the program. The program requires award winners to reflect their experiences abroad within their home campuses or communities on return.
- Sponsored by the US-Ireland Alliance, the George J. Mitchell Scholarship program provides financial support for one year of study at a university in Ireland. It is a national fellowship honoring the integral role played by former U.S. Sen. George J. Mitchell in the Northern Ireland peace process. These annual awards enable Mitchell Scholars between 18 and 30 years old to undertake postgraduate studies in any institution of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The scholarship includes tuition, accommodation, living expenses and international travel. Scholarship, leadership and an enduring commitment to community and service are prerequisites for this award.
- The Killam Fellowships program provides for outstanding undergraduate students in the United States and Canada to participate in an exchange program for one semester or a full academic year. Students have two options for registration: as direct exchange students registering at their home university or as visiting students registering at the host university. In 2011, the scholarship value was $10,000, which covers two semesters, plus a $500 allowance for health insurance costs. Additionally, a mobility grant for up to $800 is available by application to assist with the costs of an educational field trip. The direct exchange program provides for a high-cost allowance to offset tuition differentials, applied in special cases only.
- The Terry McCoy Latin American Travel Scholarship Fund provides funding for student travel grants applied to study abroad programs in Latin America. The scholarship honors Dr. Terry McCoy of the University of Florida's Center for Latin American Studies. Applicable programs include the Latin American Business study tour to Argentina, Brazil and Chile, and the Business in Brazil summer program in Rio de Janeiro.
