    Omega 3 Fatty Acids

    • Increase the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for increasing the production of tears, moisture in the eyes and regeneration of healthy body cells. You can take daily nutritional supplements, such as fish or flaxseed oils. Foods to eat to increase your Omega-3s include: flaxseeds, walnuts, salmon, halibut, shrimp, tofu, snapper, scallops, winter squash and soybeans.

    Evening Primrose Oil

    • Take evening primrose oil supplements to ease the symptoms of dry eyes. Combine this daily with vitamins C and B6. After a week or two, you should notice significant improvement in lubrication in the eyes.

    Artificial Tear Lubrications

    • Use artificial tear lubricants modestly because they contain preservatives, which can cause further eye irritation. Over-use of these products or long-term use can cause eye infections and increase symptoms of dry eyes. Talk to your health care provider about prescription-strength eye lubricants that contain fewer preservatives than over-the-counter eye lubricants.

Open a sterile eye dropper. Fill with sterile, distilled water. Place one to two drops in the eye that is dry. This will lubricate the eye naturally, without the preservatives found in artificial tear lubricants.

    Rest the Eyes

    • Close your eyes. Place a cold compress over the eyes for several minutes. Eye strain is one of the biggest irritants for dry eyes. Reduce time spent reading and viewing electronic images and words. Enlarge the font on your computer screen and use a reading magnifier for printed text. This will reduce eye strain and help to lessen the discomfort of dry eyes. Repeat the cold compress frequently when working or in situations that eye strain is a problem. Taking frequent breaks will help your eyes.

    Follow Doctor's Orders

    • Follow your doctor's orders for your health care maintenance. Dry eyes can be a result of another health condition. Treating and improving the health conditions will naturally decrease dry eye problems. Just treating the symptoms of dry eyes, without focusing on the causes, will not treat the problem. There will be a constant need for daily lubrication and relief.
