Mental Putting

On the golf course, tournaments are won and lost on the putting green.
Major money has been lost in professional golf majors because of the distance of a few inches and the path the golf ball had to travel across this distance.
Heartbreaks have occurred and lives have been changed because of putting.
I guarantee that whether you have a two foot putt to beat your neighbor or to win the Masters you will not find a more nerve racking part of your day.
So, how do we focus on making the putt and not missing it? We have to do just that, we have to focus on making it and not missing it.
Mental putting is state of mind that can be achieved with practice.
I was the worst putter that you have ever seen before I started practicing mental putting.
I was an above average professional golfer from tee to green but my putting kept me from ever reaching my potential.
I had to do something that would change that, whether I continued playing professional golf or not.
I had to find a better state of mind.
I changed my putting grip more times than I can count.
I changed the path of my putting stroke and every other aspect of putting.
Nothing helped in pressure situations until I accepted that it was all between the ears.
I began to study the mental side of putting.
When you are looking at a two foot putt take every thought out of your mind except one.
Who said to miss it any way? You don't want to miss it, do you? So, why focus on missing it.
Focus on one part of a blade of grass on the edge of the cup and knock it in, it is that simple.
Do not think about your putting stroke mechanics or what would happen if you missed it.
Do not think about what would happen if you made it.
Think about one thing.
Think about the ball traveling over that particular piece of grass on the edge of the cup, nothing else.
I spent years with so called "putting woes.
" I quickly changed that mindset and started making putts.
The human mind can only think of one thing at a time.
I understand that an individual can scroll through many different thoughts in a very short amount of time, however, this does not change the previous statement.
If you think about making the putt you will then have to think of every way that you will need to make the putt before you strike the ball.
In contrast, if you think of the ball rolling over the blade of grass as it falls into the cup and focus on that image, it will be much harder to allow any negative thoughts to enter.
Good luck on the putting green.
Vision is everything.
