    • 1). Get approval from a social worker or adoption agency. A study and review of your home will be conducted. Most adoption agencies and grant programs won't even consider you unless you have first been approved to adopt.

    • 2). Check about adoption grants with your insurance company. Many times, they have programs in place to help their clients pay for adoption costs.

    • 3). Check with your employer. Small and large companies may offer grants and financial assistance for adoption expenses. This type of employee assistance can be used as a tax write-off for the corporation.

    • 4). Contact the National Adoption Foundation for grant information. Visit their website for available funding.

    • 5). Research other public and private foundations that offer grants for adoption costs. One grant alone may not cover all the costs of adoption expenses, so apply for as many as possible. Also, most grant applications require a well-written proposal and an administration fee.

    • 6). Speak with members of your church or church leaders about your dreams of adoption. Ask them if they know any grant opportunities to help fund the adoption. Churches can be a great starting point to getting donations to help cover the adoption expenses. Demonstrating your passion to adopt by taking the initiative to start fundraisers or seek donations, showing grant foundations that you are serious about adoption. In addition, some grant foundations may request to speak with your minister or members of your church to get a character reference.

    • 7). Take advantage of the adoption expense tax to free up some of your income to fund your adoption expenses. As with child support, adoption assistance is not considered income.

    • 8). Verify that the adoption agency you choose is accredited and licensed. Most grant foundations will not accept those agencies who are not. Talk with an adoption agent about available grants that you may qualify for. Ask for a list of private foundations to provide assistance with financing.
