How to Check the Status of an Indiana Tax Return

    • 1). E-file your taxes. Go to the Indiana State Department of Revenue website or e-file through a commercial tax preparer. The state's online tracking system only works on returns that have been e-filed.

    • 2). Wait until the morning after your refund is filed. According to the State of Indiana's Frequently Asked Questions, the information on the system is updated every night. Waiting the morning after you file will allow time for any processing to be reflected in the status update.

    • 3). Gather your Social Security number, dollar amount of your refund (if you are receiving one), the confirmation number given when you submitted or filed your tax payment online. This information is necessary to find the correct individual tax information.

    • 4). Enter your Social Security number, refund dollar amount and tax year into the Access Indiana Department of Revenue Status Service's interactive tool. Click "continue" and the next screen will display any information that the agency has on your tax refund.

    • 5). Find the status of your tax payment by entering your payment confirmation number that you received at the time of your payment. The next screen will display any information on your payment, like when it was processed.

    • 6). Contact customer service at 317-234-4357 if you have any trouble with the systems. Also, check the Indiana Department of Revenue's website for system status. Their Online Services Department lists system-wide issues on the homepage, even an "all-clear" message when the system is working properly once again.
