3 Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe While Trick Or Treating

I cannot tell a lie! it is fun to dress up your dog and take them out trick or treating with the kids but you have to be very cautious about it.
There is a lot of extra stimulus on Halloween night.
First there are a lot more people around then your dog is probably used to.
Secondly everyone is dressed up and sometimes in downright scary costumes.
Thirdly your dog is always to some degree in protection mode and everyone is a stranger to them that evening.
1.
Always keep your dog on a leash when Trick or Treating
.
You may think that your dog is very well trained and doesn't need to be on a leash but you never know what could happen.
You want to avoid them jumping on any of the kids even if it is to just say hello.
I know it's hard to believe but not everyone is a dog lover and think it would be cute let along the fact that a child could get hurt.
There is also the fact that any running kids could cause your dog to run after them again scaring them, not to attack of course but some dogs automatically go into the "herding mode" Also because they are in protection mode, approaching strangers may cause them to lunge at anyone new they come in contact with.
So even if your dog is very well behaved be prepared for anything at all times.
2.
Don't approach the homes with your dog in tow
.
If you are out trick or treating with your kids then stay on the street where you can still see them but not all the way up to the door.
You never know if the owners of the home have another dog that is not quite so friendly with a new dog (remember their dog is in protection mode as well).
Your dog may just be wanting to say hello but their dog may not be that inviting and vice-versa.
You also never know if the home owner is in control of their dog and it could come outside the door to say hello to the kids and may not want to say hello to your dog.
3.
Keep a safe distance from other trick or treaters
.
You may have a nosy dog who likes to get into anything that is under their noses.
Someone's candy bag may just be one of those things that look good.
I'm sure I don't need to remind you of how dangerous that may be to your dog if they get into any chocolate etc.
Also be aware of any candy on the ground.
Let's face it sometimes the candy isn't going to taste good to some kids and they may just drop it on the street as they go along.
I know for my dog that would be an invitation to have a little snack quicker than you can blink your eye if given the chance! Go out and have fun but just be aware of your surrounding and keeping everyone safe this Halloween
