How to Wire a Ceiling Fan With a Light With Different Switches

    Installing Hardware and Wiring

    • 1). Cut the wall and ceiling for the switches and the fan. The fan's hole should be about six inches in diameter--large enough to install a brace bar and junction box to support the fan. At the point where the wall and ceiling meet above the switches, make a 1x2-inch hole for threading the electrical wiring.

    • 2). Install the hardware by attaching the switch boxes to the wall and attaching the brace bar to the joists above the ceiling. Attach the fan's junction box to the brace bar.

    • 3). Remove the power source outlet from its box. The easiest way to tap into a circuit is to place one of the switches near an outlet. See Section 3 for an alternative way to connect to the power source.

    • 4). Prepare the wiring to the junction box by feeding fish tape up through the wall-ceiling holes above the switches and across the ceiling to the fixture junction box. Attach the three-wire cable to the end of the fish tape and pull the wiring back toward you, leaving about 8 inches exposed at the switches and at the fixture.

    • 5). Run two-wire cable from Switch 1 to the outlet serving as the power source if you are not using the method in Section 3.

    Making Electrical Connections

    • 1). Kill power to the circuit.

    • 2). Connect the wires at the fixture box by connecting the red wires together. Connect the black wire from the Switch 1 to Switch 2's white wire, wrapping some electrical tape around the white wire to indicate it is carrying electrical current.

    • 3). Connect wires at Switch 1 by connecting the power-supplying black wire to the switch's common terminal (it is labeled). Attach the black and red wires to the other terminals. Connect the white wire from the power supply to the white wire from the light fixture.

    • 4). Connect wires at Switch 2 by connecting the red and white wires to the non-common terminals, wrapping a piece of black electrical tape around the white wire to indicate it is hot. Connect the black wire to the common terminal.

    • 5). Connect the wires at the fan. The two hot wires at the fan (most likely black and red) should be connected to the junction box's black wire. The white wires are then connected. One of the hot wires controls the light. The other controls the fan.

    • 6). Hang the fixture according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Running Cable From the Power Source

    • 1). Remove the baseboards between the source outlet and the switch and cut power to the circuit.

    • 2). Pull the outlet from the electrical box. Punch out the knockout on the bottom of the box with a hammer and screwdriver.

    • 3). Cut a notch at the base of the drywall to pull the BX cable through beneath the outlet and the switch. Make sure this notch is not larger than the molding.

    • 4). Connect the BX cable to any unused power supply terminals on the source outlet.

    • 5). Drop the BX cable down behind the wall and through the notch. Run it along the base of the drywall to the new receptacle.

    • 6). Pull the BX cable through the notch at the new switch and up to the switch. Complete the wiring as directed in Section 2.
