    • 1). Practice and improve your running skills at the public high school or college outdoor track in your area. These tracks are typically open to the public, when not in use by teams in training and competition. Increase your speed and distance by following a workout routine three days a week. Start gradually to build your strength and endurance.

    • 2). Determine the track runner eligibility requirements of the division, team, group or club you are interested in joining. Eligibility requirements vary depending on the high school or college athletics division and may include minimum grade-point average, SAT or ACT sum scores. Community track clubs and groups are also available without eligibility requirements. These clubs train and compete with other track running groups and often charge membership dues.

    • 3). Contact and meet with the coach, athletics department or the person in charge of recruits of the track group you want to join. Fulfill all requirements and complete the application or sign-up process.
