How to Tag Crawfish

    • 1). Place gloves on, catch the crawfish and grasp it by its thorax just above the tail, from behind so it cannot pinch you with its claws.

    • 2). Wrap the tag along the muscle between the top of the tail and the back and then twist or otherwise lock it, depending on the style tag you use.

    • 3). Record relevant information from the tag like the date, the time and the coordinates of where the crawfish is being released and write them down in your records.

    • 4). Release the crawfish back into the wild.

    • 5). Keep a tagged crawfish alive in water if you happen to catch one in your net. Record information from a tagged crawfish if you catch one. There may be contact information on the tag that you can use to contact the tagger, or you can simply contact your local wildlife and fisheries agent. In most cases he may tell you to simply release the crawfish. However, if it is a crawfish that has traveled a considerable distance from the main research area, a researcher may want to keep it alive until he can physically reach you.
