South West Trains operates around 1,700 trains a day out of London Waterloo station. When its new fleet of 143 and 144 trains were delivered keeping them clean and graffiti free was obviously high on the agenda.

South West Trains elected to trial a myriad of anti graffiti finishes at its train care facility in Southampton and the best of them all would be used exclusively. The chosen coating had to be suitable for use both internally and externally, had to stand up to rigours of the train washer and the constant graffiti removal efforts of the companies dedicated cleaning staff and would need to be safe to apply and simple to keep clean.

Before testing even began a number of the products were instantly discounted owing to their high solvent levels or dangerous, isocyanate curing mechanisms. Also another handful ha to be ruled out as the application process was simply too complex. In the end only three graffiti finishes remained and testing began in earnest with the main areas of focus being ease of application, graffiti resistance and total life cycle cost.

It was quickly apparent that easy-on was going to be the simplest to apply and needed no specialist application euipment and no specialised Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Even the impartial members of staff designated to apply the sample coatings to the pre prepared train panels commented on how uncomplicated the process was.

One week on from the original application and all the sample panels were attacked with the same types of graffiti media ranging from pens and paints through to nail varnish and correction fluid. Even stickers and fly posters were applied to see how effective the three finishes were at resisting them. Once again easy-on came out on top with a perfect result in each test. The pens, paints, nail varnish and Tip-Ex were removed using mild and safe easy-off graffiti remover which scored easy-on high marks since South West trains strive to use environmrntally responsible products wherever they can and when it came to the stickers and fly posters they simply peeled off with warm soapy water.

Last to be analysed were the total life costs of each system and it was clear that easy-on would come out on top here as well. Permanent easy-on is proven to last up to 20 years and can be cleaned 100's of times. Whilst the competition struggled to prove their lesser claims easy-on's are well documented by the National Materials Rsearch Institute and the results proving easy-on's postulations were made available.

It was a clean sweep for easy-on and it was rightfully awarded the title. easy-on anti graffiti finish was expertly applied to South West Train 143 and 144 trains and the results still speak for themselves.

South West Trains now operate some of the cleanest trains in the country and regular graffiti removal takes place using environmentally friendly easy-off graffiti remover.
