Types of Suburban Hotels

    Chain Hotels

    • Hotel chains such as Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn and Red Roof Inn frequently maintain hotels in the suburbs as well as the cities. They typically offer lower rates than luxury hotels (both those in the city and in the suburbs) and kid-friendly amenities such as swimming pools, water slides, hot tubs and in-room video games.

    Roadside Stops

    • Many suburbs originated as rural outposts on the way to a big city, so it makes sense that many of the earliest suburban businesses were roadside mom-and-pop motels. While many travelers are leery of staying at an independent motel, you can usually find one that is secure, well-run and a few dollars cheaper than the chains.

    Extended-Stay Hotels

    • Often, business will call a traveler to a certain town for a couple of weeks or months. Or, in many cases, a business traveler will be sent to consult with a corporation located in the suburbs (Many companies now own suburban property because of cheaper land and better tax incentives.)

Many hoteliers, especially those with good highway access to destination cities, have recognized these trends by opening specialty extended-stay hotels. Rooms in these hotels feature longer-term amenities such as full refrigerators, kitchenettes, and other small touches that smack more of an apartment than a hotel room. Extended-stay rates are often calculated by the week and are usually cheaper than night-by-night stays at traditional hotels.

    Luxury Hotels

    • Some travelers want to stay in a top-dollar spot but don't want the hustle and bustle of the big city. Luxury tower hotels are frequently located in suburbs, particularly those that have particularly strong business corridors; few companies want to put up a consultant or majority stockholder in a budget room.

    Convention Centers

    • Particularly ambitious suburbs have not only a healthy stock of hotels, but full-on convention centers with rooms of varying prices and ample meeting spaces for conferences and other events. These facilities usually provide big boosts in local income through taxes on local sales (people spend money when they travel) and special hotel taxes.
