Hotel deals and NYC becoming the most visited place

The last was the busiest year in the history of New York City as it saw tons of economic activities driven by the tourists hailing from outside and within the United States.

Hotel deals are the most sought after things usually when hoteliers and motel owners are at daggers drawn to attract visitors.

More than 50 million tourists visited the Big Apple in 2011 compared with 48.7 million in 2010 to rejoice at the roster of attractions making the city outshining Orlando and Las Vegas in terms of visitation statistics, although Orlando's mayor contested the NYC's claim of having become the popular city or most-visited place in the US.

Other than hotel deals, consumer magazines crossing 350 numbers, daily deal sites, and online coupons houses were awash with discount promotions.

The economic impact of visitation was estimated at over $48 billion while tourists were expected to spend more than $32 billion by December 31st on foods, leisure activities etc. Obviously, tourism does not only promote hotel trade, it has a chain reaction on other trades as well.

€That means more guests in our hotels, more shoppers in our stores, larger audiences in our museums and theaters, more diners at our restaurants, more riders in our taxis, more flights and cruise ships in our air and seaports, more economic growth,€ the Sunday Morning Herald cited NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg as saying at a news conference in Times Square while he was delivering presents to 50 millionth tourist. €And what's really important in our city -- more tax revenue and more jobs.€

It may be worthwhile to note that the mayor set the 2015 as a deadline for achieving the count in 2006, but later 2012 was fixed. Having attained the numbers in 2011, the tourism administration has broken the record. Only 10.1 million visitors were from abroad.

The city's tourist company, NYC Company, said hotels would sell 27 million room nights by yearend, up 4.5 per cent from 2010. Five boroughs have more than 90,000 hotel rooms, a 24 per cent rise since 2006.

Carrying up to 90 per cent discounts, hot deals of gastronomic treats such as table d' hote brunches, waterfront rides, etc. were flickering on daily deal sites and social media. Daily deals are gaining popularity among the community of discount seekers.

Hotels are utilizing online media as a priority marketing channel. In its Accommodation Owners Survey, TripAdvisor found the 63 per cent respondents were ready to increase spending on online marketing, followed 39 per cent on social media, 27 per cent mobile, 22 per cent on email marketing, and 17 per cent on review sites.

Fifty four per cent use social media for posting deals/special offers and 18 per cent for promoting contests.

Email marketing is a famous strategy of commercial and noncommercial businesses to reach to huge internet population but its agility should not be underestimated. Mishandling could cause irreparable cost sometimes as it actually did when a subscription cancelling email intended for 300 recipients was floated to bizarrely eight million subscribers of New York Times. The faux pass was excused as a mistake by the leading newspaper. A probe was launched to find out the causes.

Here is also a lesson for discount suppliers. The businesses should see the commercial viability while making and touting best deals.
