The nogie meggison orphanage project
According to UNICEF, there are more than 163 million orphans in the world. More than eight million of them live in institutional care or orphanages. Orphanages can also be referred to as group homes or children's homes for the needy ones. Although many people presume that most children who live in orphanages are orphans, this is often not the case as four out of five children who live in orphanages have at least one living parent and most have one extended family or the other.
Orphanages in Nigeria are mostly founded by local charities, religious groups and sometimes by individuals who are compassionate about the life of these children .Some individuals or groups of people who run orphanages however pretend to care for these children and even prey on vulnerable families to actively recruit children to ensure continued funding. Others capitalize on the precarious situation of these children especially the female ones and lure them into prostitution pretending to help them by providing them with accessibility to job opportunities and skill acquisition.
They lure these girls into large cities where they are sold to the prostitution cartels and forced into prostitution at an early age and if they refused are either killed or maimed for life. The reality of the Golden Opportunity they were offered dissolving before their very eyes. Orphanages protect children from being targeted by these human traffickers who sell them into slavery.
Despite the host of problems surrounding them, there are some notable benefits to raising children in orphanages as they do not have to face the extremely difficult life of being homeless. They also get the opportunity to grow in a stable and structured environment where they can find friends, recreation, mental health assistance, and discipline. They get the requisite education and training to prepare them for life as adults.
The Nogie Meggison Orphanage project was set up to cater for these young ones who are ‘the leaders of tomorrow'. It is a non-profit organization saddled with the task of caring, housing and education for these young ones. The orphanage has in its employ, professionals like social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, kitchen workers and custodians. Staff members are available 24 hours a day and seven days a week to ensure proper care of and safety for the children. Furthermore, the social workers main task is to follow up with their day to day activities and support them in checking whether all the necessities for the children are full filled by their house mothers, school teachers, the psychologist and the organization as a whole.
Whenever children face any social, emotional and physical problems, there is a professional physiologist who sees in to their personal problems and settles such problems. The orphanage provides a conducive and decent atmosphere where the children have decent accommodation, feeding, clothing, medical care and qualitative education.
The orphanage caters for the following groups of children
- Orphans especially of HIV/AIDS
- Street children
- Juvenile delinquent
- Abused children
- Innocent children born by female prisoners
- Abandoned kids
Many individuals and groups have voiced serious concerns about orphanages over the years. The way in which they are run has been criticized as well as the hiring methods for staff members. Since children are often targets of predators, it is important for background checks to be run on all staff members as part of the interviewing process. Children have suffered neglect or abuse in orphanages, therefore negatively affecting their development and outlook on life. These factors have already been taken care of under the Nogie Meggison Orphanage project.
The Nogie Meggison Orphanage project is structured into 3 different components
- Rehabilitation which is basically providing accommodation, medical care, feeding and education to street and displaced kids
- Re-integration which is helping the delinquents forge a new direction
- Re-invention which is to create a radical change in most of these young ones and give them a new identity.
