How To Dunk In Basketball

Perhaps the most crowd-pleasing play in basketball is the slam dunk. A slam dunk is a shot performed by a player by jumping in the air and manually powers the ball down through the basket with one or both hands over the hoop. When a player does dunk, the normal reaction of the crowd would be roaring. Although a dunk is just a 2-point basket goal, its impact to the crowd is undeniably strong.

Dunk is a really fancy shot in any basketball game. Players like Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant, amongst others can perform dunks without much effort. Is dunk shot easy to do? Most aspiring player would ask their coaches for tips on how to dunk in basketball.

There are various dunk style popularized by players like the "kiss the rim" by Michael Jordan, "honey dip" by Vince Carter and "superman" dunk by Dwight Howard. Each of these dunks is fancy and is not suitable for beginners.

To perform a dunk, a player must know the basic things to do to perfect it then later on he can integrate his own style to create his "own" dunk.

Every basketball player wants to perform a dunk or slam dunk during a game but not every player can do or perform a dunk. Dunking isn't just for everybody. This poses a challenge for average-sized men. A tall player has the advantage over shorter ones but not because a player is short, it doesn't mean that he is hopeless to make a dunk during a game.

Like all other skills in basketball, a dunk shot can only be perfected when a player constantly practices on how to dunk in basketball properly and improve it over time. Every average player wants to know how to dunk in basketball.

Here are the two things that a player must evaluate before attempting to do a dunk.

Palm the ball. Dunking is easier to do when a player can palm the ball. If a player cannot palm the ball with one hand, he can stick to do the two-handed dunk.

Jump high. A dunk is more powerful when the ball is way above the rim before powered downward through the rim by the player. Even if a player is 6-foot-8, he still needs to jump. Good dunkers are high jumpers.

Execution of a Dunk Shot

First, the player must dribble the ball towards the basket with speed. This will allow the player to gain his momentum and prepare his body for a strong leap.

Second, the player must pick up the ball from dribble at least 10 feet distance from the basket. While doing this, the player simultaneously takes his two allowed steps. The second step will be the start of the jump, pushing towards the rim and jumping as high as he can.

Third, the player needs to palm the ball firmly with the dunking hand, or grasp it with both hands in case can't palm the ball. As he ascends higher, he can extend his arm towards the rim or if using both hands, he can put the ball behind his head to avoid interception.

Lastly, he needs to slam the ball through the basket. Remember, he is not allowed to hang from the rim for a longer time not unless there's a danger that he might land on somebody.
