      With more than 11,000 inland lakes, not to mention the Great Lakes, Michigan is an outdoor playground in the summer. Whether camping in a state park, a national forest or a private campground, this family friendly summertime activity provides countless opportunities for campers of all ages. Glen Arbor, Mich., in the Leelanau Peninsula is less than 30 miles west of Traverse City, Mich., and sits on the shores of Lake Michigan.

    Traverse City State Park

    • The Traverse City State Park is nearly 50 acres of woods, hosting nearly 350 campsites and cottages open for year-round camping. Modern sites include electrical service and indoor plumbing. The park offers a paved bike trail, boat and kayak rentals, fishing, hiking, wireless Internet, swimming, playground, picnic area, concession stand and a beach house. As of 2010, campsite rental is $27 per night and cabins begin at $100 per night.

    Traverse City South KOA

    • Located 45 miles southeast of Glen Arbor, in Buckley, Mich., the Traverse City South KOA offers nearly 150 campsites, cabins and cottages. Modern sites include either electricity or both electricity and water hook-ups. Park amenities include a heated pool, basketball and volleyball courts, horseshoes, miniature golf, a game room and more. This is a pet friendly campground and has a dog park area. As of 2010, campsite rental rates range from $25 to $35 per night, cabin rentals are $50 per night and lodge rentals range from $80 to $90 per night.

    Sleeping Bear Dunes National Forest

    • In Empire, Mich., less than 10 miles south of Glen Arbor, this National Forest has more than 250 campsites, some with electric service, available on 35 miles of Lake Michigan's coastline and forests. The National Forest offers backpacking, hiking, swimming in Lake Michigan, dune climbing and is centrally located between museums, wineries and shopping areas. Campsite daily rental rates range from $5 to $43. A park entrance pass must also be purchased to camp which are $10 per vehicle for a seven-day pass or $5 per person if entering on foot, bicycle or motorcycle. An annual pass may be purchased for $20.
