How to Repair a Porcelain Bath
- 1). Ventilate your work area by opening all doors and windows; use exhaust fans if necessary. Chemical cleaning and repair products release strong and potentially noxious fumes.
- 2). Wear protective gloves when working with chemical cleaners. Dampen a rag or sponge with denatured alcohol and clean the area surrounding the damage to remove soap scum, dirt, dust and other contaminants. These contaminants can ruin the way repair putty bonds with the porcelain surface.
- 3). Fill the damaged area with porcelain filler putty. Use a putty knife to set the filler into place; scrape away any excess with the edge of the knife. Allow the filler to dry completely before continuing; consult specific product instructions for drying time.
- 4). Lightly sand the repaired surface with 80-grit sandpaper to even the area with the rest of the tub, helping to blend its appearance. Do not sand the porcelain directly, that could create further damage.
- 5). Wipe the tub down with a tack cloth to remove dust from sanding. Wash the tub thoroughly to remove residual dust before using.
