Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure whose purpose is to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose, or correct various problems which can occur due to deformity of the nose.
It is commonly referred to as a 'nose job' and is very popular with people around the globe.
The purpose of this surgery is to make sure that the nose adapts harmoniously to the facial features of an individual and improves his or her appearance.
It may therefore be necessary to associate this procedure with other facial cosmetic adjustments such as chin correction surgery and so on.
The Procedure Rhinoplasty can be performed under general anesthesia or in neuroleptanalgesia, through intravenous administration of drugs that induce a state of mental relaxation and semi consciousness in an individual.
In case of open rhinoplasty, procedural incisions are performed inside the nose itself, without cutting the columella.
In case of open rhinoplasty, an irregular and small incision is made in the septum of the nose (columella) and the procedure may include other incisions for correcting the nasal structure.
The procedure of nasal correction cannot be applied in case of a deviated nasal septum and in such cases, the patients need to go through a procedure called septoplasty.
After the procedure is completed, the nose is covered with medicated patches and a protective plaster or plastic material that will be removed after a week.
Pads are also placed inside the nostrils of the patient and these pads can be removed after 1-2 days.
The patient can resume his or her normal activities after about 1 week.
The patient should avoid exposure to the sun for at least a period of 3 months after the procedure is completed.
The patient should also avoid intense activities such as jogging, dancing, yoga etc.
as these activities can cause internal nasal bleeding.
Risks and Complications The risks associated with rhinoplasty are limited and generally rare.
It is advisable not to take aspirin and similar drugs, two weeks before and after the surgery.
The patient should also avoid applying any kind of make-up on their face, while going for the procedure.
Complications that are generally associated with the procedure include bleeding, infection and reactions to anesthesia.
Results Rhinoplasty offers permanent results and in most cases, the patients are not left with any scars.
The final results are visible mostly two weeks after the surgery.
In rare cases, patients might not get the desired results and might need to go through the surgical procedure again.
