Even women who commit to eating well and exercising can find that genetic factors can negate their efforts. At this point, cosmetic procedures such as liposuction can be an appealing option. Liposuction can provide sculpting not only to the abdomen and waist area but to the hips, thighs, arms, back and neck.

Here are some tips to consider when researching this option.

Planning and research

Just because liposuction is a cosmetic procedure, it should still be taken seriously as a surgery. Start well in advance to avoid making a hasty decision. Take some time to carefully interview potential surgeons and ensure that you feel comfortable with him or her.

Make sure it is someone that takes the time to listen and get to know your needs and medical history. Are they honest with you about whether you are a good candidate for liposuction and whether it can produce the desired results? A surgeon should be upfront about the fact that liposuction is not meant to be a weight-loss tool but rather a finishing touch.

Research the techniques available so that you are able to ask informed questions, but be open-minded to what the surgeon recommends based on your goals, medical history and body type.

Time and assistance

You will want to carefully follow your doctor's pre and post-operative instructions to ensure your health, safety and best results. Be aware that smoking will not be allowed for 30 days prior to surgery and that some medications will need to be discontinued prior to the surgery.

While liposuction is generally an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia, be sure to plan a ride to and from the clinic. You will also need to plan two to five days off of work for recovery during which time you will likely need assistance caring for your wounds. An elastic girdle must be worn continuously over the treated area for up to three weeks.

While light activity will be possible during, it may be helpful to plan to have help with housework and/or with children, particularly if they are young. Complete recovery can take up to six weeks and in some instances it may be up to six months until final results are seen.

Maintenance

Keep in mind that a healthy diet and regular exercise are important to maintaining your new figure. Make sure that you will be willing and able to fit this in to your post-surgery lifestyle.
