Variety is reporting George Clooney and producing partner Grant Heslov are teaming up to write a script involving the rescue of Americans from Tehran in 1980. Escape from Tehran follows the true story of how a fake sci-fi movie project was used by the CIA to smuggle six Americans out of hiding during the Iranian hostage crisis.

Escape from Tehran is based on a Wired magazine article by Joshuah Bearman.

Bearman's story details how Tony Mendez, former head of the Disguise Section and authentication chief of the CIA's Graphics and Authentication Division, came up with the idea of creating a fake Hollywood production company and having the six Americans in hiding pose as members of a location-scouting party for a mystical science fiction film entitled Argo.

The film's set up at Warner Bros with Clooney and the studio looking to begin production on Escape from Tehran after Clooney finishes up Leatherheads.
