The University also takes into account standardized test scores, class rank, teacher evaluations, and essays. Hiram College domestic scholarships and/or need-based grants are available to students from U.S. Territories including Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Swain's Island, the Northern Marianas Islands, The Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia.
- Ensuring a diversity of nationalities and degree-seeking candidates is a guiding principle of international financial aid awards at Portland, Oregon's Lewis & Clark College. Grades, class rank, standardized test scores, recommendations and special talents also come under consideration, determining whether the applicant receives an award and the amount. The college offers limited tuition assistance to international students who may not otherwise be able to afford enrollment. However, international students pay for room and board, mandatory health insurance, transportation, books, personal expenses and at least 50 percent of tuition costs. International students are eligible to apply for merit-based scholarships reflecting academic excellence and campus or community participation. The Mary Dimond, John Baumler and International Student Scholarship awards are exclusively for international students.
- At East Tennessee State University (ETSU), international students pursuing graduate or undergraduate degrees can apply for the International Students Academic Merit Scholarship.
