Heavy tongue weight when towing a trailer sometimes leads to sagging of the tow vehicle's rear end.
This leads to poor handling.
Weight distribution hitches eliminate this kind of problem.
The weight distribution hitch equalizes the tongue weight by placing the trailer's weight equally on all four corners.
The correct hitch ball height should be attained for the weight distribution hitch to operate efficiently.
You will need the following materials when measuring the height: a ratchet wrench, a measuring tape, a socket wrench and a hitch pin that has a locking pin.

The trailer to be towed should be packed on level ground.
Remove the trailer hitch from the vehicle that is to tow.
The trailer should be leveled by moving the trailer tongue jack to the needed direction.
The bubble found on the side level of the trailer should be exactly in the middle of the two lines.
Use the measuring tape to measure the distance between the ground and the hitch ball coupler top.

On the tow vehicle's rear end, insert the hitch draw bar into the receiver hitch making sure it's correctly done.
Insert a hitch pin into a hole on the draw side bar to make sure the bar is secured.
Use a locking pin to secure it.
Measure from the top of the hitch ball to the ground.
The measurement taken should be greater than the one from the trailer coupler.
For every 100 lb.
trailer tongue weight, the measurements should exceed by 1/8 inches.
For example, for 800 lb.
trailer tongue weight, there should be an inch higher of hitch ball height than the trailer hitch ball coupler.

Use a racket wrench and a socket to remove the hitch shank's two retaining bolts.
The hitch ball is mounted on the hitch shank.
On the draw bar's two vertical mounting holes that are closest, slide the shank.
This will place the hitch ball top at the previously determined target height.

After this the retaining bolts should be placed back to the mounting holes.
Tighten the nuts only finger tight.
Slightly tilt the hitch head forward.
Onto the shank pin that comes with the hitch, place two washers carefully.
Next, at the top of the shank is an unthreaded hole where you should insert the pin.

Make sure the hitch head rests against the pin by tilting it.
Use a ratchet wrench and a ratchet to tighten the two retaining bolts on the hitch shank.
Tow your trailer to a commercial scale to get it weighed if you do not know its tongue weight.
The weight distribution hitch will make sure you have all the weight equally distributed.
It also helps prevent trailer sway to some point.
