    • 1). Order a report from ChexSystems online. View your report for bad checks that are listed in your ChexSystems consumer report (see Resources).

    • 2). Review your records or letters that reflect the issuance of a bad check. Gather your funding sources to satisfy checks that were written from your account.

    • 3). Resolve your bad checks. Contact merchants or banks to pay outstanding checks that you issued. Request a receipt or letter to verify your payment of the bad check.

    • 4). Review collection letters that you received to determine if ChexSystems or TeleCheck represents your bank or the merchant that received your check. Send copies of receipts to ChexSystems or TeleCheck to have your bad check removed from collection activity and bad-check databases.

    • 5). Ask the branch manager of your former bank if you can open a new checking account. Explain your settlement of past-due checks and your desire to obtain a new checking account. State your willingness to better manage your account if your checking privileges are restored.

    • 6). Visit local banks to open a new checking account. Take documentation to show proof of payment for bad checks that were written from your account. Inquire about checking accounts, such as second-chance accounts, that offer alternatives for those with bad credit or bad check-writing experiences.
