Macedonia has had a difficult and deadly history in recent centuries thanks to its diverse ethnic makeup and former status as part of Yugoslavia. Today the beauty of this tiny country is starting to be explored--primarily the eastern architecture of the capital city Skopje, the Roman ruins of Bitola and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ohrid. - Macedonia has many towns and cities to explore.nightscape of resen, macedonia image by spectator from Fotolia.com
The capital city of Skopje is the most visited part of the country, and the Hotel Villa Vodno is one of the city's top rated hotels. When you hear the hotel motto, "Maybe we are not the best, but we have the best guests," you may be left wondering if you've chosen the right place. Once you listen to the raves from former guests and travelers, the doubt should lift. Set in a well-to-do residential area in Skopje, the hotel is far enough from the city center to be completely safe and close enough to the attractions to be a convenient and viable tourist option. This family hotel is run by Ljupco and Kalina Kaleovski, whose main focus is quality service and judging by the reviews, its paying off. The hotel looks like a country house, and the grounds are filled with gardens, seating areas and a pool for guest use. The guestrooms are simple but modern with sitting areas and work desks, en-suite facilities, satellite TV, mini bar, ADSL Internet, air-conditioning and daily breakfast. The hotel restaurant features eclectic cuisine with influences from surrounding cultures resulting in a selection of Croatian, Greek, Bosnian and Serbian fare. Rates for a double room start at about $122 as of September 2010.

About two hours by train from Skopje is the small town of Bitola, which is home to the ruined Roman city of Heraclea, the Bezistan Bazaar and the Star Charshiya neighborhood of bazaars. The quaint 10-room Hotel Tokin House is set a few yards off Shirok Sokak, the city's main street, within easy walking distance of the financial, business, shopping and entertainment districts. Occupying a Romanesque stone building from the early 20th century, the Tokin House has the atmosphere of a classic European tourist-class hotel. If you are seeking relaxation, the hotel has an arrangement with a nearby spa for special guest rates. A similar arrangement exists with the Korzo restaurant across the street from the hotel, where guests are provided with breakfast daily and can dine at a guest rate. Guestrooms feature en-suite facilities, air-conditioning, coffee- and tea-making materials, cable TV, Wi-Fi Internet and soundproof windows for peace and quiet. Rates for a double start around about $52, as of September 2010.

tokin-house.com - Lake Ohrid is known for its beauty.secenery boat on ohrid lake, macedonia image by spectator from Fotolia.com
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ohrid is a beautiful lakeside town located 90 minutes by bus (no train available) from Bitola. Popular for its great natural beauty, the town is reminiscent of Lake Como in Northern Italy or the eastern end of Switzerland's Lake Geneva. Besides the incredible backdrop, Ohrid has a fair share of historical attractions like the church of Santa Sofia, a Roman amphitheater. Set right in the heart of all this are the plain but inviting Villa Germanoff Apartments, which hang on the shoreline directly over the lake. With only two deluxe apartments and one double room, space at the very reasonably priced hotel is at a premium, but for those who manage to get a reservation, the experience is a memorable one. Amenities include central heat, air-conditioning, cable TV, mini bar, parking, laundry and shuttle service. A selection of local restaurants can be found within walking distance, and the pleasures of the lake are right outside your terrace gate. Rates for a double start at about $41, and a four-person deluxe apartment will run about $82 as of September 2010.
