How to Safely Clean Produce at Home

With several outbreaks of disease due to poorly handled produce, it is absolutely necessary to clean the produce that you bring home from the grocery store. Not only do you want to eliminate bacteria on your fruits and vegetables, but you also want to reduce the amount of pesticides you ingest as well. This method allows you to clean your produce at home, safely and efficiently.

You will want to obtain two spray bottles, one dark and one clear. The dark spray bottle will hold hydrogen peroxide, which will break down when exposed to light. Even though the bottle will help protect it, you should store it in a dark area to further protect it against degrading. The clear bottle will be used for vinegar, which can be purchased by the gallon at the grocery store.

Upon bringing home your produce from the store, you will want to first soak it in cool water. This helps to remove any dirt or rocks that may be found on or in your fruits and vegetables. Then, you can spray them with the vinegar solution which will help kill any bacteria that may be on them. Lastly, spray them down with the peroxide which will help rinse the vinegar off and will not leave any taste or residue. You will not need to rinse the produce after this final step, but let it dry before putting it away.

Although hearing of food born illnesses on the news may be frightening, taking steps to keep your food clean can keep you safe. Although it does take more time, it is well worth it in the end. Make a good habit of using this simple and safe method to sanitize your produce every single time you bring it home and you will greatly reduce your chances of becoming ill.
