How to Join a Gym in New York City
- 1). Find a gym that caters to your needs. Gyms like Curves on West 53rd Street and Lucille Roberts on West 40th Street in Manhattan cater to women only. Other gyms, like Quest Gym on Queens Boulevard in Queens and Equinox on Greenwich Avenue in Manhattan, have a pool. Choose which amenities you absolutely must have in a gym and make sure to mention these when you are calling gyms.
- 2). Look for gyms in your local area. In any given area in Manhattan, there will probably be at least one gym within a five-block radius. Look for gyms close to you, as you are more likely to attend a gym more frequently if it is nearby. Independent gym memberships tend to be less expensive than gym franchises, so consider the inflated price tag at a reputable, well-known gym.
- 3). Decide if you'd like to sign a contract. Most gyms operate on a one-year or two-year contract, which you will have to sign upon joining. Some independent gyms will let you pay month-to-month, like Dolphin Fitness Club on East 4th Street in Manhattan. Many gyms will have processing and registration fees. New York Sports Club, a gym with the most locations in New York City, charges processing and registration fee, but once you have joined, you can attend any of their gyms in New York City at off-peak hours.
- 4). Find a gym close enough for you to frequent. A gym membership is no good if it's too far away. Particularly in New York City, where it can be difficult to get to even the closest locations, it is recommended you find a gym that you can walk to. This way, you can include your walk as part of your warm up and cool down.
- 5). If you are moving, be sure to tell your gym. Sometimes gyms have a franchise or partner that will be closer to you than your old location. If your gym makes it impossible for you to get out of your contract, you can sell the unused portion of your contract on Craigslist.
