3 Eye-Opening Lessons I Learned While Installing a Word Press Blog
I learned some powerful lessons when I installed my last wordpress blog.
1.
Only download the software to a host that has a control panel with a one-click installation.
One of my hosts is great for customer support and other services.
However, they do not have an easy installation for word press.
When we installed my husband's site, it was simple.
However, the instructions they had for installing the word press with one of my hosts was not clear.
Unless you have experience, doing this sort of thing you would not naturally ot fill in things that were missing in the instruction.
For example, here is a critical step from the instructions provided by my host for the blog.
Open /wp-admin/install.
php in your browser.
This should setup the tables needed for your blog.
I tried to open it repeatedly using that one file.
Then I found out that I was missing something that skilled folks would know.
That was the name of mydomain name written before the file.
In other words I should have mydomain.
com/wp-admin/install.
php.
I felt dumb but knew that I was now EMPOWERED.
2.
Get help when you need it.
I learned to call the host.
(Hopefully you deal with one you can get phone support or fast responsive email) when you need help with the instructions.
I also contacted Cathy, who isthe word press wizard, and she gave me great support.
3.
Have a good FTP program and know how to use it.
I called the host and they were great.
It so happens that the FTP program that was on the host site did not work well for me.
They helped be to get another FTP program and worked with me for an hour with the installation.
I have gone back to the program because every time you want to try out a theme for your wordpress blog you must upload the new theme to your remote files.
Someone reading this is probably saying, "Why don't you just outsource all of it to someone else? That is a good option and one that I will consider in the future.
However, for now I am just trying to overwrite the script going through my head that says, "This is just too hard.
" I am convinced that with a good instructor, and persistence, it is possible!
