How Can I Make My Child Brush Her Teeth?

    • 1). Brush your teeth in front of your child. Set an example for your child by letting her watch you brush your teeth. Don't forget to smile and even hum to show your child you enjoy the experience.

    • 2). Make brushing play time. Ask your child to bring his favorite stuffed animal or doll to the bathroom during brushing time. Give him a toothbrush to use on the animal or doll. You can get in on the fun as well. Tell your child to copy exactly what you do. Put the toothpaste on your brush and make faces while you brush.

    • 3). Encourage your child to pick her own toothpaste and toothbrush. Involve her in the process so she feels she has some control. There are toothbrushes with different shapes and colors, as well as flavored toothpastes. If you make the experience enjoyable and involve your child, she is less apt to complain during brushing time.

    • 4). Reward your child when she brushes her teeth. For example, give her a gold star on a chart each time she brushes her teeth. When she reaches a certain number, get her a new toy. Think of other things that will serve as an incentive for your child.
