On October 29, 2009, police in Cleveland, Ohio went to the home of Anthony Sowell after a woman told police that he had raped her there. They found two decomposing bodies in the house. Subsequent searches turned up the remains of 10 bodies and a skull hidden in the home and buried in the yard.

Anthony Sowell Seeks New Trial

Oct. 7, 2014 - An Ohio man who killed 11 women and kept their remains in and around his Cleveland home is asking for a new trial because two procedures during his trial were not opened to the public.

Attorneys for Anthony Sowell said jury questioning during selection and a hearing regarding a video of his police interrogation should not have been closed to the public.

In written arguments to the Ohio Supreme Court, Sowell's attorneys said the judge should not have closed the individual questioning of the potential jurors to the public. They also argued that the trial judge improperly closed a hearing during which lawyers argued over a 11.5-hour video of Sowell's interview with police.

The trial judge closed the hearing on the interview video after Sowell's attorney argued that the trial should be moved from Cleveland because of the intense publicity the case was getting.

The prosecution agreed that the video hearing should have been public. They agree that Sowell should get a new hearing on the suppression of statements made to the police, but not a new trial.

The prosecution originally agreed that the questioning of the jurors should have been public. In fact, they were so concerned that the action would be later appealed, they moved for a mistrial, which was denied.

Now, the prosecution is arguing that Sowell's attorneys should have objected to the closed jury questioning at the time.

"There is simply nothing in this record that suggests that Sowell — before, during, or after his trial — has ever been unhappy with the trial court's decision to close the courtroom," they wrote to the high court.
