It essentially means being able to adapt to the physical changes in the environment, without falling victim to diseases.
There are many myths related to fitness and how it can be achieved.
One of them is that people who look thin are more physically fit than those who look plump.
This is not true.
If the firmer cannot climb a staircase without panting, and the latter can, the latter is fitter.
Another common myth is that people who weigh less do not need to exercise.
Exercise is first a mode of keeping the body system in proper functioning and then a mode of losing weight.
One of the most prevalent myths is that one can eat less, lose weight, and become fitter.
This myth has resulted in many people starving themselves in order to become fit.
In actuality, this is wrong.
Whatever food one eats, it must provide the right amount of all nutrients essential for effective functioning of the body.
Fitness of the human body is subject to two main factors - the food one eats and the exercises one performs.
By food, it is meant that a person has a balanced diet.
Balanced diet consists of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, vitamins, fiber and salt in the correct quantity as required by the human body.
Each of these has a particular function to perform in the bodily functions.
For instance, carbohydrates impart energy while proteins help in repairing of injury or wounds.
Minerals such as Iron are required to make hemoglobin and fiber is vital to digest roughage.
If the quantity of one of these exceeds than that required, it will lead to imbalance and hence make the body system unfit.
Too much energy foods, for example can lead to obesity in an individual.
The second deciding factor for fitness is exercise.
The amount and kind of exercise required further depends on the nature of work and kind of food that is part of a person's lifestyle.
Exercises such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, etc are some commonly preferred ones.
All in all, fitness is a function of not how much you weigh but of what lifestyle you have in terms of diet and exercises.
