What do conservatives think about abortion?

It may seem like a silly question, considering the pro-life and conservative movements are almost universally linked. Upon closer inspection, however, the politics of abortion among conservatives is more dicey than many non-conservatives would believe. It is true that most conservatives oppose abortion, with social conservatives leading the debate, but it isn't the defining issue for all types of conservatives.


In this week's Guest Commentary, Dr. Jack Kerwick takes a look at the issue of abortion in the wake of the National Right to Life Committee's recent endorsement of Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain, who is running for president.

The National Right to Life Committee endorsed John McCain for president this week (see this story in the Baptist News). Robert P. George, a Catholic ?natural law? theorist and professor of political science at Princeton University, wrote in this editorial in The Philadelphia Inquirer ?that there is no comparison between McCain?s history of support for the right to life and Clinton?s and Obama?s implacable opposition to it.?
