So what to do in Dubrovnik around Christmas and New Year? The answer is - plenty! Contrary to popular belief, Dubrovnik is a year-round must-see destination that will simply win you over from the get go.
For those who have never been to Dubrovnik, the "standard" tour will suffice to leave you breathless.
The drive from the airport into the city displays the majestic Old Town walls traditionally outlined with Christmas lights creating a surreal image you are bound to remember for a long time.
A walk down Dubrovnik's Stradun, the main street of the Old Town is much like stepping into a medieval, Mediterranean dream.
Consider this your starting point to discovering Dubrovnik.
Many shops, galleries, museums and cosy cafes are hidden among the numerous streets of the Old Town.
Around New Year, most of them offer a special programme, extended working hours and attractive sales periods.
A definite must-see is the Christmas Fair at the beautiful Sponza Palace which is open until after the New Year holidays.
One can find various handicrafts, decorations, candles, ceramics, glassware and other objects, all of which are hand-made by local artists and represent traditional crafts from the Dubrovnik area.
The fair at the Christmas Fair also features Dubrovnik's finest caterers and chefs offering Christmas cookies, sweet delicacies, mulled wine, candied almonds, and traditional Dubrovnik sweet delicacies including quince cheese, mantala (must cheese), prikle (doughnuts), hrostule (deep fried biscuits) and other local delicacies prepared around Christmas and New Year holidays.
For the young ones, the Nazbilj Association will traditionally perform a theatrical piece featuring several Santa characters in Stradun, while the motorized Santas will wish the children all the best for the festive season.
To complete this festive programme, the city of Dubrovnik is hosting a Gala Christmas Concert of the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra on 22 December.
There is plenty to do indoors as well, should you choose to stay at one of Dubrovnik's luxury five-star hotels.
