Easy Wall Wallpaper Installation
- The preparation of your walls before mounting wallpaper is the most important step in the whole wallpaper installation process. If your walls are greasy, dirty or have old wallpaper and/or paint stuck to them, there is no way that your wallpaper will mount nicely, if at all. The first step in this process is to strip the walls of all old wallpaper and paint. Most wallpaper can be easily soaked off the walls just by using a sponge, spray bottle and paint roller.
After you've stripped the walls of wallpaper, you should remove any mildew that may have formed under the paper using a concentrated solution of bleach and water before rinsing the whole wall with warm water. Nail holes, chips, cracks and wall irregularities should also be filled in with a vinyl compound, sanded and smoothed before sealing the walls with a coat of acrylic primer. This coat of primer not only makes it easier to slide the wallpaper into position, but also protects against future damage by preventing your wall from absorbing moisture. - The most important thing when attaching your wallpaper to your wall is to ensure that the first piece is pasted on straight. Otherwise, the wallpaper may be ruined because the whole room is papered crookedly. You can ensure that you hang the paper straight by using a plumb line or level at every corner of the room. You need to mark every corner of the room because you are unlikely to have a perfectly vertical corner.
When unrolling your wallpaper, you can remove the curl by reverse rolling it. Be careful not to crease it in the process. Make sure you cut the wallpaper into properly sized strips very carefully. When mounting it, match the patterns or your wallpaper will just look messy. If you have pre-pasted wallpaper, you need to submerge it in water according to the manufacturer's instructions and then paste it onto the walls. If you have non-pasted wallpaper you need to apply wallpaper adhesive to the back of the paper with a brush or paint roller, making sure to apply paste to the edges very liberally because they are most susceptible to peeling.
