- 1). Prepare a letter explaining why you had a tax lien. The letter should explain an extenuating circumstance if there was one, such as job loss or illness.
- 2). Make a copy of any document you have verifying the debt has been resolved. If you are still paying the debt, make a copy of the payment plan you have arranged with the IRS.
- 3). Ask for at least one written reference from a previous landlord. If you do not have one, ask for a reference from another person who can vouch for your character, such as your employer.
- 4). Fill out your rental application honestly and completely.
