How to Break a Tie in Gymnastics
- 1). Delete the highest score. Some gymnastics organizations have this rule in which the highest score of each of the tied gymnasts is deleted. The new score of each athlete is used to determine the winner.
- 2). Look for the highest individual score. If the tie occurs in the all-around event, the competitor with the highest individual score in any of the events performed in that competition will be declared the winner.
- 3). Use judges' discretion. If two competitors tie, it can be up to the judges to determine who will place where. The judges can decide based on overall performance, or on a performance in a particular event.
- 4). Improve upon the lowest scores. The event in which the tied gymnast has scored the lowest will be performed again. Each competitor will perform in his weakest event to get a new score. The competitor with the highest score wins.
- 5). Improve upon the highest score. Assuming neither competitor has scored perfect in any of the events, the competitors will perform in his or her best event to try and achieve a better score and be declared the winner.
