Hair Stylist Schools
- Aveda, a company that makes beauty products including a hair care line, offers training to prospective hairstylists through its Aveda Institutes. The Aveda Institutes are operated in several states, including Arizona, Florida, Minnesota and New York. Graduates of the Aveda's Institutes are qualified to take licensing examination; while in school, students complete 1,500 hours of instruction. In addition to hair cutting, styling and consultation techniques, students at Aveda Institutes learn business skills such as product retailing and salon operations.
- Paul Mitchell Cosmetology Schools have developed courses and teaching methods based on the theory of multiple intelligences. New cosmetology students at Paul Mitchell take an assessment test that identifies their dominant strengths. Then, instructors use the information from the tests to customize a curriculum. Students in the hair design are taught in three phases where they learn the rules, apply the rules and, finally, expand on the rules. The final phase permits students to express their creativity as stylists.
- Marinello Schools of Beauty are located in Arizona, California, Oregon, Nevada and Utah. The school's hair care programs cover topics including hair cutting, color, ethnic hairstyling and texturizing. Courses are delivered in a traditional classroom format and supplemented by hands-on experience with clients. At the end of the program, students take practice board exams in preparation for licensure. Marinello offers a $10,000 scholarship to a promising high school student who plans to study cosmetology at the school.
- The American Beauty Institute is based in New York and offers a hairdressing/cosmetology program that is suitable for aspiring hairstylists. The program is available in English, Spanish, Korean and Chinese. Students earn a certificate after completing a curriculum that includes courses in scalp treatment, hair analysis, permanent waving and hair coloring. A high school diploma or GED is a prerequisite for admission. Graduates are prepared for entry-level employment in the beauty industry.
