Low-Carb Diets Make You Stupider!
Low-carb diets work! You will loose weight! But, you will also lose one more thing with it.
You will lose your memory power! A recent study conducted by the researchers of Tuffs University, in Medford Massachusetts, was published in a nutrition research journal called, "Appetite".
The study, took into account 2 groups of women.
One group was kept on a low-carb diet.
The other was kept on a low-fat diet.
One week into the diet, interesting data started to emerge.
The group of women on the low-carb diet performed much worse than the group of women on the low-fat diet in a variety of memory based tasks.
The effects seemed to worsen, longer the diet seemed to continue.
But, what has brain functioning got to do with carbs? Well, as it turns out, the brain requires a whole lot of energy to function properly.
Most of this energy comes from the "glucose" in carbohydrates.
In the state of carbohydrate deficiency, the brain adjusts and lowers its requirement in order to conserve energy.
And this, in effect, leads to poor memory and overall poor brain functioning.
However, it must be noted that, once the low-carb dieters switched back to consuming carbohydrates, memory loss problems immediately went away.
That's to say that, there were no long-term effects on memory.
Still, we would advise you to not stay on a low-carb diet for too long.
In case you have not heard, there are many other side effects that a low-carb diet can have on a persons health.
Here are a few...
1.
Bad breadth - This results from the chemicals that get released in the body when the body starts to burn fats as the primary energy source instead of carbohydrates! 2.
Hormonal changes that make your body store excess fat - The main aim of low-carb diets is to reduce the amount of insulin the in blood.
But, this leads to hormonal changes and "insulin sensitivity".
And this insulin sensitivity means that the body goes into overdrive and will store excess fat, if available.
This is why, when people go off low-carb diets, they seem to put on weight very quickly! 3.
Lowering metabolic rate - Well, this one is obvious.
You give the body less energy to work with, the body goes into energy conservation mode and lowers metabolism in an effort to save energy.
This itself is bad from the weight-loss perspective.
But what is more, you will feel more "lazy" to get any exercise and cardio done.
So, those are some of the down-sides of a low-carb diet.
However, its hard to deny that low-carb diets do show short term results.
That fact remains!
