    • 1). Cut the skewers to the length you desire the posts for the railings to be. Leave several long skewers for the tops of the railings.

    • 2). Cover your hands, the rolling pin and your work surface with a thin layer of shortening to prevent the fondant from sticking to you or the objects with which you are working.

    • 3). Place the fondant on the middle of the prepared work surface. Press it down with the palms of your hands until it is 1/2-inch thick.

    • 4). Flatten the fondant by using the rolling pin, rolling it evenly over the surface.

    • 5). Cut the fondant into strips 1/4-inch longer than the cut skewers and 1/4-inch wide. Place one skewer in the middle of the strip cut for it.

    • 6). Roll the fondant over the skewer. Continue rolling the fondant covered skewer on the work surface, using the flat of your hand, until the seam no longer shows. Cover all the skewers with the fondant strips in this manner.

    • 7). Arrange the tops and bottoms of the railings on the work surface in the way you desire them on the cake. Attach them together using a small amount of gumpaste on the place they will attach.

    • 8). Allow the railings to dry for one hour. Place them on the cake in the manner you want, then paint them with edible paints if desired. Allow the paint to dry for one hour before serving.
