Daroff Exercises for Vertigo
- Sit up straight on the edge of your bed and quickly lie down on your side. Stay there until your feelings of vertigo abate. If it is still there after 30 seconds, go ahead and sit back up. Stay sitting until any vertigo has abated. Lie down quickly to the other side. Go back and forth 20 times. Do this two or more times a day. It might cause feelings of vertigo or nausea but eventually it should help.
- It is wise to remember not to lie down too quickly as you could bump your head or injure your neck. It is also better to start the exercise on the side that you experience the most vertigo leaning toward. Keep your neck straight in line with your spine when you lie down so your neck is not bent in either direction. This means that as you are lying down, your entire head will touch the mattress.
- You should do this exercise for two to three weeks. An improvement in symptoms generally takes about 30 sets of exercises. If you do it twice a day that would mean about 15 days. If you do it three times a day it might only take 10 days. It is possible that symptoms of BPPV could return within a year.
