No More Cookbooks!
Every website I visit and every bookstore that I happen to frequent has a large array of books on diabetes.
And 90% of them are cookbooks! Isn't it time for something better? I, personally, have been suffering from diabetes for almost forty years.
I have read books from doctors about taking care of myself.
I have read books from dieticians on how I should eat to gain better blood glucose control.
And, of course, I have a kitchen pantry full of diabetic cookbooks.
I have not, however, read or heard of any books written by or about someone WITH diabetes to which I could relate.
Do not get me wrong - it is important for me to know how to take care of myself, have proper glood glucose control and follow a healthy diet.
But it is also important for me to know that I am not alone.
I, like everyone else that was not made perfect or suffers from an incurable disease, need to know that I am not the only one.
I need to know that I am not the only one that wakes up the middle of the night sweating and shaking and desperately in need of glucose.
I need to know that I am not the only one that, since I was nine years old, has had to give myself seven to eight insulin injections everyday in order to survive.
I need to know that I am not the only one that went blind due to diabetic retinopathy.
Am I the only one who needs to know? Of course not! Everyone that suffers from this disease needs to know that they are not alone! So, I decided to share my story.
I decided to share my story of my emotional diagnosis of diabetes at just nine years of age.
I decided to share my story of numerous comas and endless struggles with my blood glucose control.
I decided to share my story of how I went blind from diabetic retinopathy in my early thirties.
I decided to share my inspirational story of how I regained my eyesight through the grace of God and countless eye surgeries.
I decided to share my fear, my hopes, my sadness, my disappointments, my stuggles, my joys, and my ability to finally control this devastating disease.
Want to know more? Of course you do! Anyone who suffers from diabetes - or knows and loves someone who does - should read my book.
I have decided to share my story for all of you that feel alone in your daily struggle with diabetes.
