    • 1). Be consistent in your eating. Your blood sugar level is usually highest about an hour or two after eating. By eating about the same amount of food around the same times each day, you can keep your blood sugar at a more even level. Some of the best foods to eat are those loaded with nutrients, such as beans and grains. Cut sweets and alcohol as much as possible from your diet when you have diabetes.

    • 2). Eat carbohydrates throughout the day. Although protein and fat do have some effect on a person's blood sugar level, carbohydrates have an even bigger effect. By eating the same amount of carbohydrates and spreading that amount throughout the day, you can keep your blood sugar at an even level.

    • 3). Use meals to make up for nutrients that your medicine lacks. Consult with a diabetes specialist to know how meals and insulin should work together. Too little food when taking insulin can lead to hypoglycemia--which is low blood sugar. On the other hand, too much food taken with insulin can lead to hyperglycemia--which is when the blood sugar is too high.

    • 4). Exercise regularly. Although exercise is generally regarded as a good way to manage diabetes, this is not necessarily true if you have not been exercising at all and then start to exercise rigorously. A doctor can let you know which kinds of exercises to do to make sure that your blood sugar level does not get too high or too low during exercise.

    • 5). Check your blood sugar level before, during and after a workout. By understanding how your body reacts during different phases of a workout, you can know how hard to push your body. Finding the right exercise balance can help you live a fuller life, even with diabetes.
